How to Add a Privacy Lattice to a Screened Porch

Privacy lattice, installed on a screened porch, provides desired visual privacy for outdoor relaxing, dining and entertaining. Premade privacy lattice typically is constructed of wooden slats or molded vinyl. It is installed quickly using specialized fasteners called lattice screws. Although lattice can be directly attached to the porch frame, many homeowners prefer the more professional appearance of individual panels installed between the posts and rails of the porch. This requires installing a wooden frame to which the lattice is attached. Once installed, wooden lath can be added to cover the irregular edges of the lattice.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and note the width of the opening on the porch where you intend to install the lattice. Depending on where the screen was installed, the lattice can be installed on the inner or outer surface of the porch.

    • 2

Measure and mark a 2-by-2-inch plank about 1/4 inch shorter than the width of the space between the vertical stiles or posts. Use a chop saw to trim the board. Measure and cut a second board to the same dimensions. Drill evenly spaced pilot holes down the center of each board, about 10 inches apart. Use a drill and driving bit to attach the boards to the centers of the upper and lower horizontal porch rails with one coated wood screw in each pilot hole.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the installed horizontal framing boards. Measure, mark and cut two vertical framing boards to this dimension. Drill pilot holes in the boards, then install the vertical portions of the frame onto the vertical stiles or posts. Align the corners of the frame to create a flat, squared surface for installing the lattice.

    • 4

Measure and mark a lattice panel so the trimmed panel is 1/2 inch shorter and narrower than the outer dimensions of the frame. Use a yardstick and permanent marker to scribe straight cutting lines on the panel. Trim the panel on the cutting lines with a scroll saw.

    • 5

Position the panel on the frame. Ask an assistant to hold the panel in place as you attach the upper corners of the lattice to the frame. Using a drill, driving bit and lattice screws, attach the lattice to the frame with screws spaced no farther than 6 inches apart.
