Recessed Door Removal

A recessed door – otherwise known as a pocket door – slides on a track inside the wall. The door is hidden and rather difficult to get to for removal. Reasons to remove a recessed door include old age and growing gaps between the door and the frame. Additionally, the hardware wears out and doesn’t work properly, making it a necessity to remove and repair or replace the door and hardware.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut through the paint and caulk located on the door stop and jam, located on the inside of the door frame, using a utility knife. Pry away the door stop and jam using a putty knife or pry bar.

    • 2

Swing the door out at the bottom and pull it away from the rollers at the top of the door frame. Remove the door and set it aside.

    • 3

Remove the trim around the door on both sides of the doorway with a putty knife or pry bar. Also remove a small piece at the top of the door frame. This allows you to access the door track.

    • 4

Remove the screws that hold the track in place over the door opening with a cordless drill.

    • 5

Locate the placement of the recessed door track inside the wall using a stud finder. Mark the location of the track at the top of the wall with a carpenter’s pencil. Measure down the wall approximately 8 inches -- enough room to fit a cordless drill into the wall -- and mark the wall again.

    • 6

Cut the square opening you marked with a carpenter’s pencil with a wallboard saw and remove the wall board. Take care not to make extra marks on the board with a saw if you are going to replace the piece later.

    • 7

Insert your cordless drill into the opening in the wall and remove the screws that hold the track in place. Pull the track out through the opening.
