How to Build Rolling Drawers

Rolling drawers provide a novel approach to home organization and storage. The drawers feature rolling casters on the bottom that let you move the drawers around your home. A small drawer pull on the front makes it easy to pull a drawer out from under a bed or cabinet. The problem with buying pre-made drawers is that the drawers only come in standard sizes. When you need a drawer for a specific space, building your own drawer is your best option.

Instructions

    • 1

Smooth out any rough spots and remove splinters by rubbing fine-grit sandpaper over all areas of the wood. Brush wood stain onto the wood with a foam paintbrush and wipe off the excess with an old rag. If you want a more colorful look, apply a coat of primer and follow with one or two layers of paint.

    • 2

Place two plywood boards measuring 1/2-by-4-by-16-inches next to two wood boards measuring 3/4-by-4-by-12-inches. Make a rectangular frame with the four boards, which serves as the base for your drawers. The boards should sit 4 inches high, 16 inches long and 13 inches wide. Apply a coat of wood glue to the edges of each board where they meet and clamp together. Wipe a damp cloth across the wood, wiping off any glue that seeped out.

    • 3

Remove the clamps the next day. Sink 1-inch wood screws through the edges of the boards. Use at least two screws on each corner, attaching the pieces together. Work your way around the drawer, adding screws on every corner. The screws reinforce the corners of the boards and firmly attaches the boards together.

    • 4

Apply a thick coat of wood glue to the top of the drawer. Press a 1/2-by-16-by-13-inch wood board on top of the glue. Clamp the top to the drawer and wipe off the excess glue with a damp cloth. Let the glue dry for several hours before removing the clamps. Sink wood screws around the top edges, securing the bottom to the drawer, just as you did with the corners.

Arrange four rolling casters on the bottom of the drawer, placing one caster 2 inches from each corner. Locate the holes in the bracket on the top of the caster. The bracket should sit flush against the drawer. Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the caster hole and into the drawer.

Place a caster on the holes, lining up the holes on the caster with the holes in the wood. Screw wood screws through the hole on the caster and into the wood. Repeat this step with each caster and turn the drawer over so that it sits on the casters.

Measure across the front piece inside the box and mark the exact center. Drill a hole through the wood at this spot until the bit comes through the front. Set a drawer pull on the front of the hole and tighten a screw through the back, adhering the pull to the drawer.
