Start with the right paint color scheme. Choose colors like brown, cream and beige, which lend themselves well to a woodsy-like feel.

Apply a textured finish to plain walls to add interest to the space. Use joint compound to achieve the effect. Spread the material with a trowel in random strokes and let it dry. Follow up with a light color to complete the rustic look.

Install wood paneling boards. Use boards with a knotty pine finish or other finishes like oak, mahogany or hickory for an authentic rustic look. Look for boards that have worm holes, knots or cracks to add to the character and desired rustic look. Leave the boards in their natural finish or paint them with a whitewash or stain.

Add rustic wall décor such as metal stars, wildlife prints or twig accents to accentuate the rustic feel. Choose pieces that best coordinate with your desired rustic look.
