How to Make a Lined Valance With Buttons

There are many different types of window treatments: some are functional, some are purely decorative and some are a combination of both. A valance is a type of treatment that fits around the very top of a window. It adds aesthetic appeal to the window, but is also useful for hiding hardware that might otherwise be seen. While most department and even discount stores offer valances, making your own allows you to completely customize your treatment and add accessories like buttons.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the curtain rod you will be using from end to end using measuring tape. Multiply this measurement by two. Cut a piece of fabric that is as long as this measurement and is 25 inches wide.

    • 2

Attach the piece of fabric to the liner fabric with straight pins. Avoid bunching either fabric and be sure to keep all of the edges straight. Cut around the fabric with shears to create an identical piece of lining fabric.

    • 3

Adjust the two layers of fabric so that the decorative fabric is face-down and the liner is face-down and centered on the top, then pin the fabrics together along each edge with straight pins. Fold the two side edges in ¼-inch each and pin them in place. Press the folds with a warm iron and sew a seam along each hem, removing pins as you go.

    • 4

Trim off any excess threads and press each seam flat with the warm iron. Lay the piece face-down again and fold up 1 inch of fabric and lining along the bottom edge. Pin this fold into place and press it with the iron to make a sharp crease.

    • 5

Remove the pins from the fold and fold the same edge up once more, creating a double 1-inch hem. Pin this in place, press the fold and sew a line of stitches to finish the seam. Trim off the excess thread.

    • 6

Fold and press a 1-inch hem at the top of the fabric, just as you did the bottom. Fold this top edge a second time, but make this fold 2 ½ inches wide. Pin, press and sew this fold to create a hem with a rod pocket.

Place the finished valance face-up on your work surface. Lay your buttons out on the front and choose a design that you like, then sew each button onto the valence by hand and trim off excess threads. Slide your valance onto the curtain rod and hang it on your window.
