How to Decorate a Door With a Chalkboard

A chalkboard provides an impermanent means of making lists and leaving notes for people. Since a chalkboard can be erased and written on again and again, it saves on paper. If you would like to make it easy for people to leave notes, you may want to place the chalkboard at the entry of a room, such as on the door. Depending on the size of the chalkboard, you may have extra room on the door to decorate.

Instructions

  1. Hanging the Chalkboard

    • 1

Put the chalkboard into place on the door first. Hold the chalkboard at roughly eye level, or chest level if a child will most likely be writing on the board, to put it within easy reach for writing. Mark the door with light pencil marks where the top corners of the chalkboard touch so that you can return the chalkboard to that position.

    • 2

Peel off one side of the backing of double-sided tape, and line the perimeter of the back side of the chalkboard, if the chalkboard doesn’t have a built-in hanger. Remove the backing from the other side of the double-sided tape to reveal the adhesive. Line the top corners of the chalkboard up with the marks that you made on the door, and press the chalkboard into place.

    • 3

Hold a screw in the hanger on the backside of the chalkboard, if the hanger is on the back of the board, line the chalkboard up with the marks that you made on the door, and press the chalkboard back until the tip of the screw presses into the door to make a mark. Put the chalk board down and screw the screw into place where you made the mark. Hang the chalkboard hanger on the screw.

    • 4

Pull up the string on the chalkboard if it has a built-in string for hanging. Line the corners of the chalkboard up with the marks that you made on the door, hold the string up on the door, and screw a hook into the door at the place where the top of the string hits. Hang the string on this hook.

    Decorating Around the Board

    • 5

Hang a chalk tray near the bottom edge of the chalkboard. Place it alongside the chalkboard at roughly waist height if there is enough space to one side of the chalkboard. If not, hang the tray at the bottom of the chalkboard using the built-in hanger and screws.

    • 6

Line the chalk tray with a variety of chalk colors. Place an eraser on the tray as well to keep all the chalkboard tools within easy reach.

    • 7

Hang small posters or useful items, such as a calendar, around the edges of the chalkboard. Use pushpins for easy removal of items if you don’t mind small holes in the door, or use sticky tack or tape on the back side of items for hanging.
