Ideas for Sheer Fabric Curtains for Living Rooms

Sheer fabric curtains are inexpensive, yet they can be used to liven up a living room in a variety of ways -- whether you have more traditional tastes or have a flair for inventiveness. If your living room could use some sprucing up, hang some sheer curtains before you reach for more expensive or time-consuming decor options, such as paint.
  1. Let the Light in

    • If your living room has windows or sliding glass doors, get rid of vinyl blinds, Roman shades, and heavy curtains that may be there now. In their place, use sheer fabric curtains, which let in the light from outside, brightening up your living room with sunshine. Use just one panel on a window if you don’t like the ruffled look, or use two panels to create ruffles. If your window faces a neighbor’s home or other sight you’d rather not see, double up on the curtains. To do this, hang sheer curtains on a tension rod, and then hang extra sheer curtains on a decorative rod that goes above the window and over the other curtains.

    Add a Valance

    • Long sheer curtains can be draped around mountable wall hooks to create a valance. Do this to add flair to the top of a window, door frame, or other design element of your living room. The resulting look will be one of whimsy and romance. Match the sheer fabric curtains to accents in your living room to ensure a cohesive look. For even more whimsy and romance, loosely wrap a long, plastic ivy or flower around the curtain panel.

    Wall Panel

    • When you have a bare or hole-pocked wall that you have no idea what to do with, sheer curtains can solve your problem quickly and easily. Simply hang a long rod so that it runs the whole length of the wall with ruffled sheer curtains. Ensure that the curtains reach all the way to the floor. If you can’t find sheer curtain panels in the appropriate length, make your own easily enough by purchasing the fabric in the correct size for the job, sewing a thin hem all around, and using Velcro to make a loop of fabric at the top end by which to hang the panels from the rod.

    Room Dividers

    • You can make decorative room dividers using sheer fabric curtains if you're the handy type. Use these curtain panels to separate your living room from a kitchen nook or other nearby area. Measure your curtains, then simply create a couple of rectangular wood frames using the curtain measurements for guidance. Paint the frames and join them using hinges, and staple or glue the edges of your curtain to the frame so that the curtain is stretched taut over the frame.
