How to Do a Random Pattern Tile Backsplash

Random patterned tiles on the wall add a distinctive look to the room and draw the eye toward a space, the backsplash, that is often overlooked. The tiles, of different sizes, colors or textures, are placed in a random-looking order to fit the specific area. Choose a random pattern before placing the tiles on the wall because you may decided a different pattern will best suit your style. Using more than three differences in the tiles allows for greater creativity.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area behind the sink to remove any bumps and dirt.

    • 2

Lay the tiles down on the counter before the wall. Place the tiles in front of you. You should have equal amounts of two of the types of tiles and have a little more than the others of the last tile type. Arrange the tiles in a random pattern by grabbing a tile and placing it on the counter without looking at the tile type. Grab more random tiles and place them in an arrangement that is pleasing.

    • 3

Apply tile adhesive to a small section of the backsplash area using the notched side of a 3/16-inch V-notch trowel. The notched side of the trowel removes excess adhesive.

    • 4

Pick up a small section of the randomly placed tiles to set them into the adhesive. Place the tiles into the adhesive in the same positions as they were placed on the counter.

    • 5

Push the tiles into the adhesive with the trowel to make them even and straight.

    • 6

Apply another small amount of adhesive to the wall connected to the first set of tiles placed on the wall. Place the next few random tiles into the adhesive and press down with the trowel.

    • 7

Continue to place the tiles on the wall in adhesive and press down with the trowel to place them evenly. Gently wipe the tiles with a damp sponge to remove any adhesive on the surface. Allow the tiles to set for three hours.

    • 8

Place a large amount of grout on the backsplash and press it into the spaces between the tiles with a grout float. Add more grout to the wall if all the spaces are not filled level with the tiles.

    • 9

Clean the surface of the tiles with a damp sponge to remove grout from the tiles.
