Hanging a Large Painting Along Stairs

Hanging art on the wall along a staircase can present a challenge because art is typically hung at eye level. Because your eye level changes as you ascend or descend the stairs, the placement of the framed pieces must encompass an average along the entire stairway. Hanging a large painting along stairs will require a little measuring and calculating to determine the proper height.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Hanging hardware

Instructions

    • 1

Stand on the bottom stair and place the tape measure on the wall so the end of the tape measure rests flush on the bottom stair. Extend the tape measure straight up the wall and make a small pencil mark at 5 feet, 4 inches. Repeat the same process on the top stair. Draw a light line between these two points to create a baseline for hanging the painting.

    • 2

Measure the distance on the wall between the bottom and the top of the stairs and divide this distance by two. Make a mark along the baseline that represents the halfway point of the stairs -- you will position the exact center of the painting over this mark.

    • 3

Measure the entire height of the painting, including the frame, and divide this height measurement by two to find the halfway point of the height of the painting. Make a mark on the back of the painting at this point. Measure up from this mark to the hanging hardware on the back of the painting. Make a mark on the wall above the baseline this distance -- this is where you will install the hanging hardware.

    • 4

Install the hanging hardware in the wall at the point you marked. Use drywall-anchoring screws if you are not installing the hardware in a stud.

    • 5

Hang the painting on the hardware. Erase the baseline you marked after you finish hanging artwork on the wall.
