Study your wall to get an idea for the chalkboard’s placement. Use measuring tape, a pencil and a long level to draw an even square or rectangle across the space you want to turn into a chalkboard.
Clean the wall with warm, soapy water and a large, flat sponge to prep it for paint. Allow the area to completely dry before starting to paint. While you wait for the cleaned area to dry, move furniture away from the area, lay a dropcloth over the floor and tape off any moldings or nearby fixtures to protect them from paint splatter.
Border the box you drew with painter’s tape. Check your work again with the long level. Run a bead of caulk along the inside edge of your tape, and then wipe at the caulk line with a rag to leave behind only a very thin layer. This step seals the underside of the tape from paint, which will leave you with a perfectly straight line once you remove the tape.
Pour the paint, glaze medium and powder grout into the paint bucket. Stir the ingredients for several minutes until they’re well mixed. Dip your roller into the bucket, and saturate the cover with your DIY chalkboard paint. Roll the cover against the roller screen several times to remove excess paint.
Paint across the inside of the taped box. Make overlapping “V” or “W” shapes with the paint roller for smooth, even coverage.
Dip your brush’s bristles about halfway into the paint bucket. Tap the brush against the edge of the bucket’s interior to take away excess paint. Drag the brush along the inside of the painter's tape border to complete the first coat of chalkboard paint.
Allow the paint to dry completely, and then add a second coat. Lightly score along the edges of the painter’s tape with a utility knife to avoid pulling away any of the paint as you remove the tape.
