How to Hang Panel Curtains to Divide a Room

Dividing a room into two separate areas is sometimes necessary to conceal private areas for sleeping, laundry or a dedicated work area. An inexpensive curtain room-divider provides a visual barrier that may be easily removed when you no longer need it. In this simple project, curtain panels are suspended by a chain attached to opposite walls by hooks screwed into wall-framing studs. No special tools or advanced carpentry skills are needed for this project.

Things You'll Need

  • Curtains with top casement hems
  • Medium-duty utility chain
  • Bolt cutter
  • Heavy-duty screw hooks, 2 1/2 inches in length
  • Stud finder
  • Measuring tape
  • Drill and drill bit

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and note the distance between the walls, where you plan to hang the curtain. Using a bolt cutter, cut a length of utility chain, about 1 foot longer than the distance between the walls.

    • 2

Locate the positions of the framing studs on opposite walls, closest to where you plan to install the room-divider curtain. Using a stud finder and pencil, mark the positions on the walls. Mark one wall, in a vertical line with the framing stud, to indicate the height of the curtain-suspension chain. Measure the distance from the mark to the ceiling. Transfer that dimension to mark the opposite wall.

    • 3

Drill a pilot hole through each mark into the walls and framing studs. Install a screw hook into each pilot hole. Turn the hooks clockwise to tighten, until the curved portions of the hooks meet the walls. The opening of the hooks should face upward.

    • 4

Thread the upper casement of the curtain panels onto the suspension chain. Ensure the fronts of the curtain panels are all facing the same direction. Hang one end of the suspension chain onto one hook. Hang the other end of the chain on the hook on the opposite wall. Adjust the chain tension, if necessary, to eliminate sagging.

Trim excess chain with a bolt cutter. Slide the panels to evenly distribute the curtain across the chain.
