How to Make Short Curtains

Use short curtains and free up the space below your window. Short curtains should extend below the bottom window molding so the whole window frame is completely covered when they are closed. Make an exception to this rule on a window seat, or when the window sill is wide enough to be used as a shelf. In those cases, the bottom of the curtain should just brush the seat or sill. Hang the curtains on a 1-inch curtain rod.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the top of the rod to either just below the window frame on a standard window or to the top of the window seat or shelf. Add 5 1/2 inches to this measurement.

    • 2

Cut two rectangles of fabric with this length and a width equal to the length of the curtain rod.

    • 3

Lay the rectangle on the ironing board with the right side of the fabric down. Make a 3/8-inch fold on one side edge of the curtain. Iron this fold. Iron down another 1/2-inch fold to make the side hem. Fold and iron all the other side edges of the curtains in the same way.

    • 4

Sew the side hems by stitching between the folds with a straight stitch, 1/4 inch from the folds.

    • 5

Make a 1/2-inch fold on the top and bottom edges of the curtains. Fold down a 1 1/2-inch casing at the top of the curtain and a 3-inch hem at the bottom. Make and iron these folds in the same way you make the side hems.

    • 6

Stitch the hem and the casing in place by sewing 1/4 inch from the edge of the inside folds with a straight stitch.
