How to Measure for and Hang a Mirror Over a Sofa

Hanging a mirror behind a couch makes the room look bigger by creating an optical illusion and adds interest to a bare wall by mirroring the wall across from it. A properly placed mirror should hang at eye level for a standing person. This way it isn’t too close to the back of the couch, and it can create the proper mirroring effect to the parallel wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the room wall behind the couch to see how tall and wide it is compared to the size of the mirror. Find the spot in the middle of the wall where the mirror would be centered over the couch and mark it.

    • 2

Measure from the ground up to about 57 inches tall. This is considered eye level for most people. Mark the space on the wall that is both 57 inches tall and centered behind the couch.

    • 3

Hold the picture hangers against the marked part on the wall and place a nail into the hole. Hammer the nail into the wall.

    • 4

Lift the mirror up and hang it on the picture hanger. Adjust the mirror until it’s hanging evenly.
