How to Hang a Sliding Room Divider Curtain

Sliding curtain panels provide the ideal solution to dividing a large open space. Curtains are lightweight and can clump together to give you the most space available and yet shut off a portion of the room for privacy when needed. Curtain panels slide easily across plastic coated wire without having to install large sections of hardware or other fixtures. For stability, at least one end of the wire should connect to a wall stud; however, you can also secure them from a ceiling joist.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area that you want to cover with panels. Make a small pencil mark at each corner or end point of the space.

    • 2

Standing on a ladder, project a line with a laser level to check that each end point is in a level line. If they are not on the line, have your partner move the dot to the line.

    • 3

Drill a pilot hole at each end point.

    • 4

Insert an eye bolt into each pilot hole and finger-tighten the bolt in place. Then, insert the tip of a screwdriver into the bolt and twist to tighten the rest of the way.

    • 5

Thread the end of the aircraft wire through a wire rope clip and through the loop end of a turnbuckle. Bring the wire back through the wire rope clip and tighten with pliers.

    • 6

Hook the hook end of the turnbuckle to one end point and stretch the wire to the next corner or end point.

    • 7

Cut the wire three inches longer than the distance to the next point with a pair of cable cutters.

    • 8

Thread on the curtain panels, a wire rope clip and the loop end of another turnbuckle. Bring the wire back through the wire rope clip and hook the hook end of the turnbuckle to the next eye bolt. Pull the tail of the wire to remove some slack in the wire and tighten the tail of the wire in the rope clip.

    • 9

Ask your partner to turn the other turnbuckle as you turn one to tighten the wire and create enough tension so the wire does not droop across the space.

    • 10

Repeat for each end point that you want to cover with panels.
