How to Hang a Cuckoo Clock When There's No Stud

Cuckoo clocks require a firm fastener because of all the weight inside. Weights power mechanically operated cuckoo clocks. The weights, generally shaped like pine cones, range from one-half pound to seven pounds each depending on the clock's size. A typical cuckoo clock has two weights: one to keep time and the other to operate the cuckoo bird and bellows for the sound flutes. When a wall stud is not available, install an expansion fastener with basic do-it-yourself skills.

  Measure about 80 inches up the wall from the floor. Mark the point with a pencil. This distance assures a sufficient length for the cuckoo clock's weight chains to hang freely.

  Drill a hole the same diameter as the expansion fastener.

  Insert the expansion fastener into the hole. Lightly tap the fastener with a hammer until the fastener head is even with the surface of the wall.

  Install the fastener screw and turn it slowly clockwise with a screwdriver. Stop turning when the fastener pulls against the wall.

  Turn the screw counterclockwise until the head of the screw is approximately one-quarter inch from the wall surface.

  Hang the cuckoo clock on the fastener screw.
