How to Drape Sheers on a Rod

Sheer curtain panels are used alone, behind heavy drapes or as a valance. They allow sunlight to come in through the window while blocking the view into your home from outside. You can either hang the sheers from a rod and drape them over metal tie-backs or treat a panel as a valance and drape it artfully over the rod above the window. Sheers are thin and smooth, so it may take a few tries before you become adept at draping the fabric.

Instructions

  1. Using Tie-Backs

    • 1

Fit the rod through the tops of the sheer panels.

    • 2

Mount the rod to the mounting brackets. Position the space between the panels in the center of the rod.

    • 3

Pull the panels to each side and position them behind the tie-backs.

    • 4

Pull the panels up slightly and in toward the center of the window. Allow the panels to drape and balloon out over the inner edge of the tie-backs. Adjust the pleats until they look almost identical but opposite.

    Creating a Valance

    • 5

Lay the sheer panel on a flat surface. Fold the panel accordion-style into 2-inch pleats.

    • 6

Wrap two or three pieces of cord or string around the panel at intervals to secure the pleats.

    • 7

Place the ends of the sheer behind the rod and allow the center to drape down in front of the rod. Adjust the sheer until the ends hang down evenly. Alternatively, wrap the panel around the rod several times, covering the rod and leaving enough slack to allow the panel to balloon and drape over the window. Adjust the sheer until the ends hang down evenly or disappear behind the rest of the valance.

Remove the string or cord and adjust the pleats carefully with your fingers until the sheers drape over the rod and you are satisfied with their appearance.
