How to Add a Sheer Rod to Drapes

A sheer backdrop for drapes provides privacy while still allowing light to enter through the window. You can either replace the rod you already have with a double rod assembly or install a cafe rod for the sheer panels behind the drapery rod. Cafe rods sit close to the wall; most drapery rods will provide enough clearance to install a cafe rod between the mounting hardware. The sheers will cover the rod, making it impossible to tell that the rod doesn't match the original drapery rod.

Instructions

  1. Replace the Old Rod

    • 1

Unscrew the rod tension screws and remove the rod and curtains from the mounting brackets.

    • 2

Unscrew the mounting screws and remove the mounting brackets.

    • 3

Purchase a double curtain rod of the same width and screw the mounting brackets into the previously drilled holes. If the holes don't line up perfectly and the brackets were mounted to a framing stud or the window frame, simply screw the brackets into place. If installing into drywall with no stud, fit an electric drill with a bit one size smaller than the mounting screws and drill pilot holes through each screw hole. Hammer drywall anchors gently into each hole and screw the mounting brackets into the anchors.

    • 4

Thread one rod through the top of the sheer panels and place the rod in the back bracket. Thread the other rod through the top of the drapes and place the rod in the front bracket. Tighten the rod tension screws to secure the rods to the brackets.

    Install an Additional Rod

    • 5

Remove the drapes and rod and set them aside.

    • 6

Measure the distance between the rod mounting brackets and subtract 3 inches. Purchase a cafe rod small enough to fit in the space.

    • 7

Screw the cafe rod brackets into the wall or window trim between the drapery rod brackets. Leave 1 1/2 inches of space between the cafe and drapery rod brackets to allow space for the ends of the cafe rod.

    • 8

Thread the sheers onto the cafe rod and snap the rod into the brackets. Replace the drapery rod and drapes and tighten the tension screws to secure the rods in place.
