How to Make Brocade Curtains

The raised designs on brocade fabric mimic the appearance of embroidery and create a luxurious look. Silk and satin brocade have a sheen that adds richness to the fabric's appearance. They work well in an elegant formal dinning room. Brocade can also have multicolored designs on a matte background. This type is often woven with a beige background to mimic tapesty work, which is elegant without being stuffy. Use it to make a traditional living room more inviting. Brocade curtains must be lined to cover the unattractive back side of the fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the curtain rod and the distance from the top of the rod to the floor. Add 7 1/2 inches to the second measurement.

    • 2

Cut two rectangles of brocade fabric with these measurements to make two curtain panels. Each panel will be almost twice as wide as the half of the rod it will cover. This gives the curtains a full appearance.

    • 3

Cut two rectangles of lining fabric 2 inches narrower and 5 inches shorter than the brocade rectangles.

    • 4

Lay one rectangle of brocade cloth on a flat surface with the bottom of the fabric closest to you. Lay the lining fabric on top so that the top and the rights sides of both pieces of fabric are even. Pin the fabric together along the right side.

    • 5

Sew the right sides of the fabric together by stitching a straight seam one-half inch from the right edge. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 6

Pull the left side of the lining over to meet the left side of the brocade. The brocade will fold along the right side of the curtain when you do this. Pin and sew the left side of the lining and fabric together as you did the right side. Sew the lining to the second panel in the same way.

    • 7

Turn the panels right side out so that there is a 1-inch border of brocade on each side of the backs of the panels. Iron these folds. Iron the back side of the curtain first. If you need to iron the front side, use a pressing cloth to protect the fabric.

    • 8

Fold 1 inch of the fabric at the top of one curtain to the back. Iron this fold. Make another 2-inch fold to make a casing. Sew one-quarter inch from the bottom fold to hold the casing in place. Make a casing in the other panel in the same way.

    • 9

Fold 1 inch of the fabric to the back at the bottom of the curtain. Iron this fold. Fold up a 4-inch hem. You will be folding at the bottom edge of the lining. Iron the fold. Hand sew the fold at the top of the hem to the lining. Hem the other curtain in the same way.
