Things to Add to My Screen Door to Make It Look Unique

Most screen doors are boring and have no character -- that's the sad truth. An aluminum frame, screening and, at best, some aluminum strips or curls, make up almost every screen door you'll ever see. This doesn't have to be the statement you show the world at the front of your house, however. Get your creative juices flowing and turn your boring door screen into a one-of-a-kind artistic original.
  1. Paint

    • Look on the streets of just about any large city and you'll see buses covered in paint. These paint jobs look as if they block out the view from the windows, but passengers can see out of them perfectly well. The secret is in painting thousands of dots on the outside and allowing the space in between to show the view from inside. You can create this same effect by painting directly on the screen. The paint will be picked up by all the crossed wires in the mesh, but they won't affect your view from inside the house. Paint a geometric design, copy a famous painting, or design a mural for your front door.

    Artificial Vines

    • Use wire or small twist-ties to affix artificial ivy, morning glory or other decorative vines to your screen door. Curve the vines around in a natural way to make them look as if they are growing directly on the screen mesh. You'll still be able to see out through the spaces between the leaves, but the vines will cover the view to the inside of your home as well as decorate the screen door.

    Picture Frame

    • Purchase framing strips in a frame store or find wood strips with a 45-degree angle cut on the corners. Paint and finish the wood strips like a classic picture frame with a glossy wood finish and perhaps gold stripes in some of the crevices. Use wood glue or other adhesive to stick the frame to the front of your screen door frame.

    Jewels

    • Collect cheap pierced earrings from thrift stores and yard sales. Use the jeweled posts to create a colorful design on your screen door. Push each post through a hole in the screen and secure it with the earring backing on the inside of the door. Scatter the jewels randomly over the surface of the screen or use the colors to make a mosaic design.
