Five Ideas for Sliding Mirror Closet Doors

Sliding mirrored closet doors can help to make your room look bigger and be a unique element of your home decor. If you are going to invest the time and money into installing mirrored sliding doors, you should also consider ideas to add further decoration to your doors. Take advantage of the many design options that mirrored doors offer to personalize your home's decor.
  1. Etching

    • Glass etching can be done through sandblasting or by using the Leptat acid method. You begin by creating stencils of the designs you want to feature on your mirrored doors. Some designs to consider would be your family last name or your initials, or you could get elaborate with small outdoor scenes or animals. Sandblasting can be messy and inaccurate, but it is a quick way to get the job done. Leptat acid is applied directly to the glass and can be much more accurate than sandblasting.

    Window Film

    • The privacy and window films used on bathroom windows or sliding glass doors to give a unique look and create privacy can be used on your mirrored doors as well. Create a frost-inspired border to each sliding panel using frost window film. Black window film can be used to create patterns and silhouette style pictures of the moon, people or animals. There are also stained glass-patterned window films that could create a very interesting look for your sliding mirrored closet doors.

    Spray Paint

    • Stencils and spray paint can be combined to add color and designs to your sliding mirrored closet doors. You can create stencils for any design you like, or you can use spray paint to create a border around your mirrored panels. If you have small children, you could paint a small scene along the bottom of your closet doors that the children can enjoy when they are playing in your room.

    Segments

    • If you are considering having brand new mirrored sliding closet doors installed, consider mirrored panels that are broken up into segments. This offers a unique look that can help break up the reflections in the doors and create the feeling of having a funhouse mirror in your bedroom.

    Curtains

    • When the sun comes in through your window and reflects off the mirrors, or on those occasions when you do not want to have the effect of having a large mirror in your room, put a curtain or sheer over the mirror. Install a pull-cord curtain rod that will help you to open and close the curtains easily. Allow the curtains to be pulled at least 12 inches beyond each side of the closet for easy access.
