Door Monogram Ideas

A great idea for a wedding or housewarming gift or to decorate your own home, a door monogram can help a home stand out in a neighborhood of dwellings that look alike. A monogram can have up to three letters. When there are three initials in a monogram, you should place them in the order of the first initial, last initial and middle initial. The middle letter generally will be the largest.
  1. Hung from a Ribbon

    • Purchase letters made of wooden blocks from a craft store and paint the letters the color of your choice if they do not already come pre-painted. If you are able, loop a satin ribbon through the opening of a letter. Good initials for this looping technique include the letters O, P, R, B and Q. After looping the ribbon through the opening, tie a knot 12 inches above the letter. If you cannot loop the ribbon through an initial, like the letter I, use a hot glue gun to adhere a length of ribbon that you folded in half to the back of it; tie the top of the ribbon into the knot. Then, create a bow with the loose ends of the ribbon. Place wreath hangers over the door and hang the letters.

    Monogram in a Wreath

    • Using a technique similar to the first idea, you can create a monogram within a wreath that you hang from your door. Using a store-bought wreath or one you've made yourself, use a thin satin ribbon or fishing line to hang small wooden or metal letters. Instead of looping the ribbon or fishing line through the letters, use a piece of strong, weatherproof adhesive tape on the back of the initials. Secure the ribbon or fishing line to the back of the wreath with a knot, ensuring the letters all hang at an even level.

    Decals

    • Order a custom-made vinyl decal that is weatherproof, whose colors will not fade in the sun and that will not lift the paint off your door when you want to remove the sticker. Custom sticker-maker companies can create die-cut stickers and monogram borders according to the specifications you desire. The best doors to use with monogram decals are those that have a flat, smooth surface. If you have a metal door that holds magnets well, consider using a custom-made decal backed with a magnet. When you use a magnetic decal, you can reposition the initials in the monogram as you please without out worrying about lifting the door’s paint.

    Natural Monograms

    • Twist soft branches, like freshly cut grapevines, into the shapes of the letters you need for the monogram. Use florist tape or wire to make the branches hold their shape. Allow the branches to dry in a dry location before removing any of the florist tape or wire. However, it may be a good idea to leave some of the wire in place to help the branches retain their shape. Hang the initials with ribbons or back them with strong magnets, using craft glue, if you have a metal door.
