Decoration Ideas for the Wall Next to the Staircase

Don’t forget the staircase when it comes to decorating. The walls in these spaces can be challenging but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. You can liven up this area with just a few additions. Use the space to create an ambiance that complements the rest of your home.
  1. Mirrors

    • Mirrors are ideal for stairways because they reflect light. Be creative and hang a different arrangement on your wall. Install square mirrors in a stacked progression for an interesting atmosphere. Alternatively, hang round and square mirrors in a geometric pattern. Look for frames that coordinate with the style of your décor, such as wrought iron in a rustic home or antique gold frames for a traditional style.

    Photos

    • Always personal and fun, photographs are one of the easiest ways to decorate your stairway. Hang a collage of family photos in a variety of frames for a collage look. For a monochromatic grouping, hang black and white photos in black frames.

    Artwork

    • The stairwell is an excellent place to display artwork because you have an entire wall to devote to it. If you have a favorite painting, install spot lighting to not only bring attention to the painting but to light the stairway as well. Hang a quilt as art. The wall is an ideal, safe place for an antique quilt or throw that’s been in the family for years.

    Frames

    • Don’t throw away empty frames when you can put them in your stairway. If you have a mismatched collection of frames, arrange them on the wall any way you please. Put small frames in larger ones and if you have a singular large frame, put several smaller frames in it for a striking arrangement.

    Stencils

    • Get creative and give your stairway personality with stencils. Look for stencils that reach from the floor upward, to create a sense of spaciousness in the area. From trees to ivy to quotes, you can find the right stencil that fits with the mood of your home.

    Boxes

    • Shadow or wooden boxes are ideal places for your knickknacks because they are safer than shelves. Put four or five boxes in a symmetrical line going up the stairs. Use them to display some of your favorite things, such as a collection of sewing notions. Glass shadow boxes look ideal in modern and contemporary style homes.
