How to Hem Chiffon Curtains

Chiffon is lightweight and almost sheer. Chiffon curtains let in light while still providing privacy. They're a popular choice when you don't need a lot of coverage at a window. Chiffon is available in many colors and can be used under heavier curtains for a decorative effect. But because of its light weight and slippery nature, chiffon can be difficult to work with. To sew a straight, even hem, you'll need to take your time and use the right tools.

Instructions

Hang the curtains, and mark your hem by inserting a straight pin at the edge of the curtain on each side to indicate where you want the bottom of your hem to fall. Hanging the curtains frees your hands to work on the hem and allows you to get the hem even on both sides. Once you've marked the hem, take the curtains down to continue working on them.

Preheat your iron to a warm or delicate setting. Lay the edge of the curtain on your ironing board, and fold the edge of the fabric along the line you marked for the bottom of your hem. Smooth the fabric with your fingers a few times to crease it. Lay a thin cotton cloth over the chiffon, and iron the chiffon to set the crease.

Sew a line of stitching a fourth inch below the line you pressed. Stitch slowly, guiding the fabric with your hand. Trim the fabric below this line of stitching to within a fourth inch of the stitching.

Fold the fabric along the line of stitching and then again on the pressed line. Stitch an eighth inch from the edge of the hem.
