How to Hang Window Scarves on Patio Doors

Window scarves offer a decorative frame for patio doors. Whether sliding or French style, patio doors are typically twice the width of a regular door and more than three times the size of a window. Due to their size and the way they open, they can cause issues when it comes to decorating. With a simple window scarf, you can add color and decoration without interfering with the view or the operation of the doors.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 4 inches up and 2 inches out from the top of the door frame. Start at the top left corner of the frame and measure up, then out. Mark the spot and repeat for the right side. These are the points for installation of a curtain rod for the window scarf.

    • 2

Measure from the point on the wall where you wish the scarf to hang to, up to the marked curtain rod point. Multiply this number by two. Now measure across the top of the frame. Add this to the previous number plus 1 inch. This is the length of material needed for the scarf.

    • 3

Hang your curtain rod, installing according to the manufacturer's directions using the marked points as guides.

    • 4

Cut lightweight material to the length determined in step 2 and 7 inches wide. Fold a 1/2-inch hem on all sides and glue down with fabric glue. Accordion-fold the material into 3inch folds and hold in place with sewing pins. Skip this step if using premade scarves.

    • 5

Wrap the scarf around the curtain rod. There is no right or wrong way to wrap the scarf. Be sure the ends hang down evenly on each side and wrap around the curtain rod at least twice to ensure the scarf stays in place. The scarf should hang out past the side frame of the doors at the end of the curtain rod. Remove the sewing pins and arrange the material to suit.
