How to Install a Swag Hook in Drywall

Installing a swag hook in a hollow portion of a sheetrock wall is a simple project that does not require special tools or advanced carpentry skills. A swag hook is essentially a hook with a threaded shank that screws into a winged toggle. The toggle is hinged. The wings collapse to fit through a hole in the drywall. Once the toggle is in place, a spring in the hinge spreads the wings so the pressure on the wall is distributed over a large area, increasing the holding power of the hook.

Instructions

Assemble the swag or toggle hook by screwing the hook onto one end of the threaded shank. Compress the wings of the hinged toggle together between your thumb and forefinger. Note the widest diameter of the collapsed toggle and then release. Insert the shank into the hole between the wings so when the wings are collapsed, they meet at the shank. Turn the hook clockwise two or three turns to securely attach the hook to the toggle.

Mark the ceiling or wall where you plan to install the swag hook. Select a drill bit to bore a hole just large enough to allow the collapsed toggle to pass through. Affix the bit to the drill. Drill a hole through the drywall at the marked position.

Collapse the toggle by squeezing the wings together. Pass the folded wings through the hole in the drywall. A snapping sound will tell you that the wings have opened on the other side of the drywall. Pull the hook toward yourself so the wings rest firmly against the back of the drywall. Turn the hook clockwise as you pull. Continue turning until the hook meets the surface of the wall or ceiling.
