Curtain-rod brackets are usually installed on either side of the window frame, about 4 inches away from the glass on each side and 4 inches above the glass. Curtains typically cover the entire frame, but don't necessarily have to if you're short on room or have intricate moldings you want to show off. A valance needs to cover the entire width of the curtain rod and have enough extra fabric for gathering.

Measure the width of the window pane. Add 8 inches to the total. If you wish to leave the frame exposed, measure the distance between the mid points of each piece of vertical trim.

Purchase rods long enough to span the distance.

Measure the distance between the mounting brackets of already-installed rods, and add 6 to 8 inches to the total if you intend to hang gathered sheers.
