How to Hang Curtains on a Travis Rod

Traverse rods, also referred to as Travis rods, allow you to open and close draperies with the tug of a cord. The curtains hang from hooks that fit into holes in plastic tabs that slide along the curtain rod. Traverse rods are most often used with pinch-pleated drapes. The drapery hooks fit neatly into each pleat. The tabs in the traverse rod keep the pleats spaced evenly, resulting in a uniformly gathered look when the drapes are opened and closed.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert one drapery hook into each pleat of your curtain. The drapery hooks have a pointed, or barbed, end and a hooked end. Slide the barb into the fabric, burying the barb inside the pleat.

    • 2

Mount the traverse rod over your window. For best results, the ends of the rod should extend 3 to 4 inches past the outer edge of the window.

    • 3

Slip the hook at one end of the curtain panel into the first hole in the plastic tab on the traverse rod. Slip the next hook into the next hole until every hook is inside of a hole.

    • 4

Close the curtain then step back and look at it. Note any gaps or sags. This is an indication that you have either failed to insert a hook or forgot to slip the hook into one of the tabs on the rod. Correct any errors and close the curtain again.

    • 5

Open the curtain. Again check to make sure there are no sags or gaps along the top of the curtain. If there are, make sure all of the hooks are firmly seated in the tabs on the rod.
