Hanging a Window Scarf With Hooks

If you'd like to accentuate the length of a long, narrow window or make a shorter, wider one seem taller, window treatments that hang well above the window frame and graze the floor help create that illusion. A window scarf can do the same, while adding a touch of elegance and framing the window, as well. Scarves typically come in sheer, lightweight fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a mark above the window frame on one corner where you'd like the scarf to hang. Hanging the scarf well above and outside of the frame creates the illusion of a larger window. Measure the distance from the top of the window frame to that spot, and mark a spot the same height on the opposite side of the window.

    • 2

Install an adhesive wall hook by peeling off the back sticker, and pressing it onto one of the marks. Repeat on the other side of the window.

    • 3

Install anchored hooks into the wall for a more permanent mounting setup. Drill holes just smaller than the circumference of the wall hooks' screws on both hook marks above the window.

    • 4

Screw the hooks in tightly. Keep the hook with its opening facing up toward the ceiling.

    • 5

Iron your window scarf to get rid of creases and wrinkles. Gather the scarf loosely into a long sash.

    • 6

Loosely tie a ribbon on one end of the scarf. Leave a long tail to hang down the wall. Keep the knot loose to adjust it, once you've hung the scarf. Repeat with the other end of the scarf.

    • 7

Tie one ribbon to one of the hooks, and repeat with the opposite side of the window scarf. Slide the scarf, and tighten or loosen the ribbon to get the look you want. For a loose, flowy look, keep the ribbon loose, or cinch it tightly for a more gathered look.

Double-knot the ribbon onto each hook, and tie a decorative bow, or snip the tails.
