Cut fabric 13 inches long and 9 inches wide for each curtain tie.
Fold the fabric with the right side of the fabric together, long sides matching. Press.
Sew a ½-inch seam down one short end and along the long side of the tie.
Turn the tie right side out, pulling the fabric out from the open short end of the tie. Press.
Tuck the raw edges of the unsewn short end of the tie in by 1/2 inch. Press. Sew closed with a sewing machine or by hand sewing.
Sew a buttonhole in each end of the tie, or sew small curtain rings to the inside edge of each tie. Loop the buttonholes or the curtain rings over cup hooks you have screwed into the edge of the window frame to hold up the tie after you've looped it around one curtain panel.
Cut a section of rope or cording 18 to 20 inches long. You'll need a longer cord for thicker curtains or draperies.
Dip the ends of the rope or cording in a liquid seam sealant to keep them from fraying. You can purchase this type of sealant at fabric stores.
Tie a knot in each end of the cording. The knot is a decorative effect and not necessary if you don't like the look.
Sew a curtain ring to each end of the cording, to one side of the knot if you tied knots. Slip the ring onto cup hooks that you screwed into the window frame to hold the curtain ties.
