How to Hang a Wooden Valance With an L-Bracket

Measure the width of the window or other opening over which the valance will hang. Divide the measurement in half. Use a pencil to make a light reference mark at the top of the opening at the center.

Measure the length of the valance from the inside edges of the side boards. Divide that measurement in half. Use the result to make a light reference mark at the top of the opening on each side, an equal distance from the center reference mark.

Hold the valance over the opening. Align the inside edges with the reference marks. Move the valance up or down to determine the best location over the opening. Lightly mark the wall at the bottom edge of the valance on each side. Make light reference marks on the wall indicating the mounting position of each L-bracket, using one of the brackets as a guide. Plan to use two brackets per side, or more for a wider or heavier valance. Position the brackets up inside the valance so they will be hidden from view if possible.

Drill small pilot holes in the wall for each L-bracket. Mount the brackets with screws. Take care not to overtighten the screws or wallboard damage may result.

Hold the valance in position by slipping it over the L-brackets and aligning it with the reference marks. Drill a small pilot hole for each of the bracket screws on one side of the valance only. Take care not to drill through the valance and damage the exterior finish or fabric. Mount one side of the valance using screws.

Place a level on the top of the valance. Use it as a guide to keep the valance level while drilling holes for the remaining L-brackets. Mount the valance to the brackets with screws. Carefully erase any visible reference marks on the wall.
