How to Decorate Large Apartment Walls

Large walls in an apartment might seem intimidating, but they don’t have to be. They provide an opportunity to get imaginative and arrange things in an interesting way. When looking at a large wall, put together several decorative arrangements rather than a single large arrangement. The secret to decorating a large wall is thinking of the space in sections, in conjunction with how you’ve arranged the furnishings in the entire room.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang a large mirror or piece of artwork on the large wall. You don’t necessarily have to put it in the center of the wall. Instead, look at the arrangement of your furniture and place it above a sofa or desk in the living room or above a headboard in the bedroom. Keep the mirror or artwork at eye level, just above the furniture, rather than putting it high in hopes of filling the wall. The two items look like they belong together, as opposed to the artwork looking as if it’s floating in space.

Put a rug, tapestry or other textile art on the apartment wall. To protect the piece, attach a sleeve to the top back side of the rug and hang it from a dowel.

    • 3

Hang a grouping of photographs on your large wall. For the best look, use several photographs and frames of varying sizes and shapes.

    • 4

Add shelving units to the wall. A shelf that reaches from the ceiling to the floor is functional as well as decorative. You may want to put a pair on each side of a window or fireplace. Make the shelves places to show off collections and favorite knick-knacks.

Attach decals to the wall for a distinctive design. From nature scenes to geometric designs, you can find decals to match any mood and style imaginable.

    • 6

Install a group of wall or shadow boxes to show off antiques or personal collections. Keep the boxes close enough together so they look like a group rather than unrelated objects far apart on a wall.
