How to Insert Pins in Pinch-Pleated Drapes

Attractive drapes are made from panels of fabric that are several times wider than the window. Pinch pleats bring this extra fullness to the front of the curtain rod. Less fabric under and behind the rod allows the drapes to close easily. This is essential on a traverse rod, where the drapes are attached to the rod in only a few places. It is also helpful when the curtain is made of heavy fabric. Pin hooks are used to hang a pinch-pleated drape from either type of rod.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a drapery panel right side down on a flat surface.

    • 2

Make a pencil dot 1/4 inch below the top of the drapery in the center of each pleat.

    • 3

Make pencil dots in the top corners of the drapes, 1/4 inch below the top and 1/4 inch in from each side of the drapes.

    • 4

Hold a drapery pin hook with the point of the pin pointing toward the hem of the drapes and insert it at a pencil mark. If the pleats have been sewn together along the length of the pleat, stick the pin behind the seam. If they are only sewn together at one point, run the pin through the pleat on the right of the center for one inch, then through the pleat on the left of the center for one inch and then back through the pleat on the right of the center. This centers the pin and holds the pleats together. If the drapes are made with an odd number of pleats on the back side, stick the pin through the center pleat.

Push the hook down as far as it will go. The open part of the hook will face down. Insert hooks behind all the pleats in the same way. Insert hooks in the fabric at the marks on the sides of the curtain as well.
