How to Calculate Ceiling Fabric Swag

A soft, flowing fabric swag may be used as a curtain-top valance, an unstructured frame around an arch or doorway, or even a substitute for a headboard. Installation with screw-in hooks or knobs is simple and takes only minutes. Determine the length of fabric for a swag using a decorator's trick with no complicated calculations. Once you decide where to install the hooks or knobs, you can test-fit the swag before you purchase or cut the fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the positions to install the hooks or knobs to hang the fabric swag. Hammer one wire nail into the wall near the ceiling at each position. If you intend to hang the swag on the ceiling itself, screw a cup hook into the ceiling at each position. Wire nails and small cup hooks leave only small holes that are easily patched, should you decide to reposition them.

    • 2

Hang a length of string or clothesline rope on the installed nails of cup hooks, simulating the position of the fabric swag. Drape the string or rope, just as you intend to drape the swag. Visualize the fabric swag as you reposition the string or rope until you are satisfied with its configuration. Trim the ends of the line at the desired length of the swag.

Remove the string or clothesline rope from the hooks or nails. Measure and note the length of the line. This dimension is equal to the length of fabric needed to make the swag.
