Prior to painting, go over the brick wall with a stiff-bristled brush to remove dirt and dust. If the brick is a dark color, roll on a paint primer before applying paint. Cover the brick wall with a fresh coat of light-colored, latex paint in a flat finish. White and cream colors will brighten the room, giving it a modern feel.
Add a few ceramic or mosaic tiles, such as white and black subway tiles, to a brick wall to add contemporary flair. Install a temporary support ledge for the tiles. Create a smooth surface with thinset on the portion of the brick wall where you want to affix tiles. Affix tiles from the bottom up. Use a grout float for applying grout over the tiles. Allow the grout to dry for about 30 to 60 minutes. Wipe over the tiles with a damp grout sponge, removing excess grout on the tiles. Add the tiles without painting the brick if the wall is a naturally gray-toned, modern-looking brick.
Hang a large, colorful abstract piece of artwork on the center of the brick wall by installing a ceiling-mounted rail system and hanging the picture from a cable or rod that slides onto the rail. If the brick wall is large, consider hanging a grouping of smaller canvas pieces. Install an art light to illuminate the artwork, bringing out the vivid colors and injecting life into the room.
Hang modern pendant lights from the ceiling in front of the brick wall, adding illumination to the room and instant visual modernization to the brick wall.
