Rustic Wall Texture Colors

When creating a rustic look for your home, color and texture are both key in the overall design. In particular, the walls of a room benefit from a blend of color and texture that provides a warm, rugged feel for the space. You can add texture to your walls in different ways, but it's important to keep your color palette focused on earthy, natural colors that fit the rustic style and provide a cozy feel for your home.
  1. Natural Wood Tones

    • If you want to recreate the look of a log cabin in your room, wood paneling is an ideal wall treatment. The paneling’s texture adds dimension and visual interest to the walls, which give the room a charming, rugged look. The natural look of the wood also adds an inviting feel to the room, so it is an ideal option for a family room, library, basement or rec room. For the most rustic look, start with paneling that uses a darker, richer wood like cherry or oak, and use a mid-toned stain that enhances the natural aesthetic of the wood paneling.

    Terra-Cotta

    • For a rustic look inspired by Tuscan décor, a plaster finish is an ideal way to add texture to your walls. You can add pigments to your plaster prior to application to tint it in a shade that matches the room’s color palette. When it comes to Tuscan décor, terra-cotta plaster provides a classic look for your walls. The warm, rich tones of the terra-cotta create an atmosphere worthy of a gathering place, such as a kitchen or dining room. Pair it with dark wood and metal accents, and add other warm shades like red, brown and yellow to finish off the room’s more earthy attributes.

    Brown

    • If you prefer a darker look for your walls, a brown plaster finish such as in a large living room, you can use a deeper brown color like chocolate. However, in a smaller room, a lighter shade such as tan or taupe is a better option because it makes the room feel more spacious. Combine brown plaster walls with light, soft accent colors such as peach and cream. Use natural materials like cotton, linen and canvas for your furnishings, window treatments and rugs to complement the look of the room.

    Gold

    • While rustic décor is inviting, many of the colors traditionally used are dark shades that can make a space feel smaller or dreary. If you want a look inspired by a rustic Tuscan villa that still feels bright and lively, tint your plaster with gold pigments before applying it to the walls. You can also use various shades of gold paint to create a faux finish that adds texture to your walls. Like terra-cotta and brown, gold is a warm yet bolder shade that gives a regal touch to any room, but its lighter tone makes the room feel more spacious. You can use darker colors like terra-cotta, brown and red as accent shades to add depth and dimension to the space. Pair your golden plaster walls with hardwood flooring, stone surfaces and metal accents.
