How to Hang Sheer Curtains Over Vents

Sheer curtains add a romantic quality to room decor. They can also create a degree of privacy. Window sheers are often made of polyester, linen or a blend of the two and come in a range of colors. Typically they are layered at windows with weightier drapes or curtains. Floor-length sheers located above a heating or air-conditioning vent can block the flow of air or pose a fire hazard. The vent draft can also cause sheers to poof out in a distracting or unattractive way. Hanging sheers near vents takes caution.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a distance of 12 inches from the top of the vent and mark the 12-inch point on the wall with a pencil.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the top of the window well to the 12-inch mark.

    • 3

Buy or find sheer curtains of this length and no longer. If the sheers you find are too long, hem them -- by hand or with a sewing machine --so they do not extend beyond the 12-inch mark.

    • 4

Slide the sheers over curtain rods and set the rods into place. This may require hanging curved rods over wall brackets, settling straight rods into protruding brackets or sliding extendable rods securely into place at the top of the window well.
