How To: Curtain Rods for a Drawstring Double Pull

A traverse rod is used for drawstring curtains, and there are a variety of options available. Single-pull drapes are drawn to one side, while double-pull drapes are drawn to both sides and meet in the center. Double traverse rods allow home decorators to hang two separate curtain panel pairs for a layered look, such as a heavy drape over a sheer curtain. Whichever look decorators want to achieve, knowing how to hang traverse rods properly is the first step toward a new look for windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of your curtains using a measuring tape if you are unsure of their dimensions. Subtract 5 inches from the total width of your panels to avoid a gap when you close the curtains.

    • 2

Add 1 inch to the height of your curtain panels if you want them to be floor length. For shorter curtains, measure from the floor to where you want your curtains to fall and add that measurement to the height of your panels to determine how far from the floor you should hang the traverse rod.

    • 3

Measure the width of your window if there is no clear indicator of where the center is. Center the curtain rod by placing a pencil mark at the middle of the window.

    • 4

Measure the width of the curtain rod from the screw hole at one end of the rod to the hole at the other end, and divide the width in half. Measure this distance out from the center window mark to the left and mark with a pencil to indicate where the rod should end. Repeat the measurement to the right and mark the other rod end.

    • 5

Subtract 1/2 inch from your required height measurement. Measure this distance from the floor and place a mark for the required height at the appropriate width for each end of the rod. Erase the previous width marks to avoid confusion when drilling.

Use a stud finder to determine if there is a stud where you placed the pencil mark. If so, insert a screw through the top hole on one end rod bracket. Align the screw with the pencil mark on the appropriate side of the window and screw into the wall using a cordless drill. It there is not a stud, attach your curtain rod with drywall anchors to help prevent your curtain rod from pulling out of the wall. Repeat to hang the other end bracket.
