Different Ways to Paint the Walls of a Teen Girl's Room

Painting the walls in your teen girl's room can give it a quick makeover with little change to decor and accessories. Let your teen take the lead on color choice. She can use her creativity on a project that requires planning and following of steps, and she'll have a space she made her own using decision-making skills.
  1. High Contrast

    • Your teen girl may want dramatic color in her room. Pair colors that create high contrast, such as black and purple, or slate gray and bold yellow. For a brighter, energized room, choose a light color for walls and a dark color for trim and accent decor, or she can choose to offset dark walls with plenty of color on the walls, whether through molding or wall hangings. She can also choose two colors from opposite ends of the color wheel.

    Rich Patterns

    • Add texture to your teen's room through the use of rich motifs or patterns. Use stencils or decals to cover white walls in black damask or Victorian designs for a touch of elegance with a contemporary edge. Or deck out a wall in large blue and yellow dots for a mod look. Have your teen come up with her own design or look at wall decals and paper. Decide on paint patterns according to her taste and whether you have sleek, angular shapes in her room or round, soft shapes.

    Images

    • If your teen has a favorite photograph, musician or animal, celebrate it by painting a mural of it on her wall. Paint your version of a black and white photograph on the wall behind her bed, in lieu of a headboard, or cover a long wall in a mural painting. Paint an image of silhouetted birds roosting on a clothesline over a low bookcase or paint a portrait of her favorite band.

    Neutrals

    • Neutral colors can make room for other design elements to take center stage. If your teen has plenty of dark furniture and bold color, then soft, neutral colors can keep the room expansive and bright without seeming impersonal. Soft hues in ivories, creams and light grays can bring out elegant fabrics and furniture designs or provide a backdrop for more casual furnishings.
