How to Personalize a Vinyl Roller Blind

Vinyl roller blinds are inexpensive window coverings that effectively block out sunlight and create privacy. However, they often come in basic white or cream colors and seem more like a blank spot in the room’s décor. One way to transform the entire look of the room is to personalize the roller blinds using paint. Your design options are almost limitless and the end result is a painted canvas that is both decorative as well as functional.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the roller blind from the window if it is still installed. Roller blinds have two metal tabs on each end of the top bar that you lift up to slide them out of the mounting brackets.

    • 2

Lay the roller blinds on a clean table and unroll them all the way. Have the top roll face up to personalize the interior of the blinds, although you could also personalize the exterior of the blind, which faces the exterior of the home.

    • 3

Wipe the entire surface of the vinyl blind with a damp sponge to remove all dust and dirt. Dry the vinyl with a soft cloth to remove all moisture.

    • 4

Measure the length and width of the blind with a tape measure. Divide each number in half to identify the center of the blind and mark it with a pencil. This helps you center any stencils and properly position painter’s tape.

    • 5

Layout the basic framework for your design using painter’s tape or a stencil. Ensure that the tape is pressed firmly down along the edges to prevent paint bleeds. If using a stencil, spray the back of it with stencil adhesive, wait 15 seconds, and then press it onto the vinyl.

    • 6

Open a can or jar of latex paint and insert a foam paint brush into it by 1 inch. Drag the brush across the rim to remove the excess.

    • 7

Apply the paint inside the tape or stencil lines until no portion of the original blind color is visible.

    • 8

Wait at least two to three hours to allow the paint to dry fully. Pull off the painter’s tape and stencil, if applicable, to reveal the design.

    • 9

Rehang the roller blind above the window by sliding the metal side tabs into the brackets.
