How to Design Your Own Window Shades

Designing your own window shades lets you have a customized window treatment without spending a lot of money. After designing the shades, either construct them yourself or hire a company to do the work. Another option is to alter a commercially made roller shade or miniblinds into a shade that works for your purposes.

Instructions

Decide on the style of shade you want in the window. A Roman shade lies flat against the glass. Raise or lower the shade into elegant folds. Roller shades spin up to let light in or pull them flat against the window. A simple shade option is a flat piece of fabric, cut and sewn to fit inside the window frame. The shade can be tied with ribbons letting light in, or it can fold and be held in place with hook and loop closure or snaps.

Choose a material for the shades. Heavy canvas keeps light out. A lighter-weight, sheer fabric gently diffuses the light that shines through. Other material options include vinyl or wood.

Pick a pattern or color for the shades. A room with simple details, such as solid-color furniture and neutral-colored walls, is enlivened with windows shades with a bold print. If your furniture is patterned, pick a solid-color shade so that your decor isn't visually overwhelming.

Decide if you want embellishments on the shades. Some shades have tassels or fringes on the bottom edge. Others gather into ruffles when pulled. If your room has a romantic or Victorian theme, the embellishments may fit your shades. A more minimally decorated room calls for basic, flat shades.
