How to Make a Valance out of Birch Bark

A window valance hides the top edge of drapes or curtains or is used as a decorative window treatment over shades and shutters. A rustic valance adds country charm to your decor, so a birch bark valance is perfect for a log cabin style home or ski chalet because it brings a touch of the outdoors inside. Birch bark sheets can be purchased from specialty suppliers. Birch bark can be delicate, so it's a good idea to reinforce it for strength.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window that will receive the valance. Cut a piece of plywood to the width measurement plus 6 inches with a height of 12 inches with the saw.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of plywood to measure 12-inches by 6-inches for the sides of the valance.

    • 3

Glue the wood pieces together with one shorter piece on each side to create an open rectangle with a missing long side. Let the glue dry for 3 hours. Pound in the penny nails at the joins with the hammer, adding a nail every 3 inches along the join.
