How to Make Cloth Tie-Up Blinds for Doors

Cover up the window on a kitchen or front door with blinds for privacy. When you want to let the sun in or enjoy the view, tie the blinds up so you can look outside. Making your own tie-up blinds out of fabric is a project you can complete in an afternoon. Choose a pretty satin ribbon or other tie to hold the blinds up.

  • Measuring tape
  • 1 to 2 yards cotton fabric
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Hang the curtain rod above the window on the door. Measure from the top of the rod to the bottom edge of the door's window for the height, this is measurement A. Also measure the width of the window for measurement B. If the curtain rod is slightly wider than the window, measure its width instead.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of fabric. The first piece will be the top of the blind and the second piece will be the bottom portion of the blind. The first piece should be 10 inches long by measurement B, plus 1 inch in width. For example, if measurement B is 25 inches, cut the first piece to 26 inches wide.

Cut the second piece to be measurement B plus 1 inch wide, and measurement A minus 8 inches long. If measurement A is 60 inches and measurement B is 25, the second piece of fabric will be 52 inches long by 26 inches wide.

    • 3

Cut two lengths of ribbon that each measure twice the window's height. Set aside.

    • 4

Fold the sides of the two pieces of fabric over 1/2 inch, and then another 1/2 inch and press. Pin in place. Stitch along the sides to conceal the raw edges.

    • 5

Fold the top edge of the smaller piece of fabric over 1/4 inch and then over another inch and pin. Stitch along the edge to make a pocket for the curtain rod.

    • 6

Fold the bottom edge of the larger piece of fabric up 1/2 inch and then up another inch. Pin and sew along the edge to hem.

    • 7

Fold each length of ribbon in half widthwise. Drape the ribbons over the top raw edge of the larger piece of fabric. The inside of the fold of the ribbon should lie against the edge of the fabric, and the ribbon should stretch down both the front and back of the fabric. Pin and then stitch the ribbons to the fabric with a few stitches.

    • 8

Lay the shorter piece of fabric on top of the bigger piece, lining up the raw edges of one long side. The right sides of the fabric should face each other. Pin together and sew a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 9

Unfold the fabrics and press the seam flat. Slide the blinds onto the curtain rod. Tie the ends of the ribbon together to bring the bottom of the blinds upward. Untie to let the blinds hang flat against the window.
