How to Get Grommet Drapes to Hang in Pleats

Grommet-top drapes are designed to hang in waves. However, some people like a pleat-like appearance when they are fully closed. You can create this effect by sewing the back side of the curtain. The front of the drapes will tend to take on a rounded shape with the pleats facing to the back.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the grommet top curtain face down on your work surface.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the first and second grommet. Mark the center point and 3/4 inch on each side of it. Use a straightedge to draw two straight lines the height of the curtain along the 3/4-inch marks using tailor's chalk. Repeat between the third and fourth grommets, the fifth and sixth and so on all the way across the curtain.

    • 3

Pinch the center line between the first and second grommets and lift. Align the two 3/4-inch lines and pin. Repeat between each pair of lines.

    • 4

Sew along the lines. This will create a 1 1/2-inch loop of fabric facing backward between every pair of grommets. Hang your curtains with the loop side toward the window.
