How to Hang Window Scarves Over a Sliding Door

Window scarves are an attractive and simple way to dress up the top of a sliding glass door. By using swag holders or brackets, the scarf ends can be turned into rosettes so that they don't get caught in the opening and closing of the door. This keeps the appearance of the treatment clean and simple while still bringing color and texture to the doors. Mounting the brackets only takes a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Position one swag holder bracket at a 45-degree angle to and 4 inches above the left corner of the door molding. Place the second holder at a 45-degree angle to and 4 inches above the right corner. These are your anchor holders.

    • 2

Measure between your two marks and divide by two for every two door panels. This means that if you have a wall of doors you may have a bracket every 24 to 30 inches across the entire set of doors. Mark the wall for the location of each bracket. Place each bracket 4 inches above the door trim.

    • 3

Screw the tulip-style swag holder bracket into the wall so that the slide portion of the bracket is on the bottom and the tulip face is upright and shaped like a U. Each holder has two screw holes. If you do not screw into a wall stud, use a wall anchor in the wall to help support the bracket.

Measure the width of the doors. Add 24 inches for each bracket. Cut your fabric to reach this length. In most cases, you will not need to hem your fabric before installation.

    • 5

Place your fabric on a work table lengthwise. Accordion-fold the fabric in 4-inch folds. Find the halfway point of your fabric length. Start hanging your fabric from the center of your doors. Loop your fabric over a tulip holder. Pull 20 inches of fabric through the U. Repeat for each holder.

Adjust the drape size between your holders so that all of your drape sections are even. Form the loop of fabric at the tulip holder into a rosette shape by tucking some fabric into the holder curlicues and by pulling the rest around the holder in a puff shape. Use 3 inches of cut floral wire to hold the fabric in the shape you want. Repeat for each swag holder.
