Hanging Drapery Rods on Brick Walls

While interior brick has aesthetic appeal for many homeowners, it does not lend itself well to modification. Hanging art, shelves and other household decor on a brick wall requires that you drill into the mortar with concrete screws. Drilling into mortar is much more difficult and time-consuming that drilling into drywall. Drapery rods need to have brackets screwed into the wall, and wide, hollow anchors to hold the brackets in place. Drapery anchors are often too wide to fit comfortably in the mortar, and drilling through the bricks themselves isn't an option. Fortunately, you can still enjoy elegant draperies on your interior brick wall by installing the drapery brackets through the window casing rather than in the wall itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the top of your window casing with a damp cloth. This removes dust and debris that settled on the casing over time, preventing it from getting your new draperies dirty when you hang them.

    • 2

Line up the window casing bracket with the back edge of the window frame. Drill two screws into the window frame through the holes in the bracket. This secures the bracket to your window frame.

    • 3

Line up and screw in the second bracket on the other side of the window frame in the same manner.

    • 4

Hang the drapery rod on the brackets. Step back, and examine the rod. Turn the swivel rod on the bracket to adjust the height and width of the bracket to your liking. Turn the locking mechanism on each bracket to the “locked” position after you make the necessary adjustments.

    • 5

Unscrew one end of the drapery rod. Slide the draperies onto the rod through the rod pocket. Screw the end of the drapery rod back into place.

    • 6

Hang the rod and draperies on the brackets.
