How to Hang Scarves for Corner Windows

Corner windows add light and an expanded view, but the window placement often puzzles homeowners when they want to install a simple window treatment like a draped scarf. One way to solve this problem is by using standard scarf corbels that have a pass-through hole designed for the scarf. A corbel is an L-shaped bracket that is designed to look ornamental on the underside of a shelf or ceiling. The corner corbel uses a triangular corner block behind it to turn the corbel on the diagonal. This allows the single corner corbel to continue the scarf for both windows.

  • Triangular wood block
  • Miter saw

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the back of the corbel. Measure the height of the corbel. Corbels are often several inches thick with a carved appearance. A scarf corbel will have a hole to allow the scarf to pass through the sides of the corbel.

    • 2

Cut a wood block measuring 4 inches by 4 inches to the height of the corbel if the width is 4 inches or less. Use a 6 inches by 6 inches block if the corbel is more than 4 inches wide. Use a 45-degree triangle to draw a diagonal line the width of the corbel across the cut end of the block. Use the line as a guide to cut the block with a miter saw.

Fit the cut side of the triangular shaped block to the back of the corbel. They should fit evenly on all sides. Apply construction adhesive to the cut side and the back of the corbel and then clamp the two pieces together until the adhesive dries.

Prime the wood block with a paintbrush and primer. Allow the primer to dry. Paint the block with paint that either matches the color of the corbel or matches the wall color. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 5

Measure 4 inches above the window trim molding at the corner. Screw the corbel to the wall through the mounting holes in the corbel using long wood screws. The corner of the wall will have wood studs for you to screw into. Install your standard corbels 4 inches diagonally away from the outside top corners of the window molding for each window. Use wall anchors if there are no studs at those locations.

Insert the window scarf through the corner corbel bracket and drape the fabric to each of the side brackets. If the fabric slides, use a push pin and rubber band inside the corbel hole to hold the fabric in place.
