How to Double Drape a Valance

A double draped valance uses two similar swags to enhance the top of the window treatment. A double swag in two colors can be created by using two separate pieces of fabric crossing one over the other along the valance rod or box to achieve the swagged look. Most double swags use a single length of fabric with one swag flowing onto the front side of a rod and the second swag flowing behind the rod. One trick for creating this look involves using an attachment tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Place hemmed two-sided swag fabric that is at least twice the width of the window horizontally on the work table.

    • 2

Position the long edge of the fabric toward you. Measure 4 inches from the edge. Position a straight edge like a yardstick at the 4 inches. Fold the bulk fabric along the 4-inch mark. Measure 2 inches from the 4-inch mark. Fold the fabric accordian style away from the front edge. The straight edge will help you keep the two folds straight and parallel with each other. Measure 4 inches from your fold. Insert your straight edge. Fold back your 2 inches. This will create a series of 4-inch folds that overlap each other by half. Continue to the top of the fabric. Keep all of your folds parallel and neat.

Measure the length of your fabric to find the center point. Place the adhesive backed loop portion of hook and loop tape at 90 degrees across your folds. Press to attach the adhesive securely. You can sew the tape for additional security. Trim off the excess tape.

Measure the length of your curtain rod. Find the center. Attach the hook portion of the adhesive backed hook and loop tape with equal portions of the tape centered along the top side of the curtain rod.

Press the hook and loop tape together. The folded fabric will fall on either side of the rod. Keep the folds together and drape 1/4 of the fabric across the rod in the opposite direction of the swag. Repeat for the second end. Adjust the bottom fold on each swag to be the same length from the rod. Locate the fold above the bottom fold. Pull on the extra end fabric to make the fold more shallow than the bottom fold. Locate the next fold up and repeat. Your top fold will be nearly horizontal with the rod. Repeat this for both swags so that they look even.
