Blackout vs. Thermal Lining

Draperies are available with many specialty linings, including thermal and blackout. Choosing between the two will depend on the room you are decorating and how it will be used. Thermal lining is intended to help control the temperature of the room where it is used, while a blackout lining’s purpose is to keep out light. Either lining can increase a curtain’s insulating properties by 25 percent, according to the Natural Curtain Co.
  1. Thermal Lining Uses

    • Thermal curtains are primarily used for climate control. They can help keep a room warm in the winter and cool in the summer by preventing cool or warm air from escaping through windows. These linings also can help improve heater and air conditioner efficiency, saving you money on your utility bills. Thermal linings also provide some protection against ultraviolet rays.

    Blackout Lining Uses

    • Blackout linings are intended to block as much light as possible. These room-darkening linings are often used in hotels and motels to help guests get a good night's sleep. Aside from preventing light from coming through, these linings also can help keep out unwanted sound and protect sensitive fabrics, such as silk, from harmful UV rays.

    Construction

    • Thermal linings usually are constructed of 100 percent cotton, wool or polyester. The fabric typically is coated with acrylic foam and may include a layer of aluminum to help keep heat and cool out. Blackout curtains are made of a polyester/cotton blend layer coated in acrylic foam and placed between the drapery fabric and a cotton lining.

    Considerations

    • When choosing between thermal and blackout curtains, consider your climate. Thermal liners are preferable in places with extreme hot or cold climates.
When installing a blackout lining, you may want to also include a sheer layer of curtains in your window covering design to allow for light to penetrate when desired.
