How to Make Reverse Belt Loops for Curtains

Reverse belt loop-style curtain panels create a strong front curve at the top of the curtain. This style has become more common but is sometimes hard to find in the right color or pattern for your décor. The solution is to use flat panel curtains or pocket curtains and add your reverse belt loops to the back. This allows you a much larger selection of curtain styles, colors and patterns from which to select.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your curtain rod. Divide this measurement by two. Add 1 1/2 inches. This is the length of your loops. Measure the width of your curtain panel. Divide your width by six and add two. This is your number of loops.

    • 2

Cut 1-inch wide grosgrain or twill ribbon to your length measurement. Cut the number you will need. Paint your cut ends with no fray liquid and allow the liquid to dry.

    • 3

Place your curtain face side down on the work table. Measure away from the side edge by 1 inch. Measure down from the top 1 inch. Mark with tailor's chalk. Repeat for the other side edge. Draw a line in tailor's chalk from mark to mark. Measure between your marks to evenly space your loops. Mark the location of each loop.

Measure down from your top chalk line 2/3 the length of your loop. Draw a second line. These lines will help you keep your loops level and straight.

    • 5

Turn the end of your ribbon under ¼ inch. Turn the fold under ¼ inch. Thread a needle with heavy-duty thread. Tie the thread ends with a knot. Center your rolled loop end over your loop mark, even with the top line. Stitch the loop to the back inside of the curtain. On most drapes you will not sew through to the front of the drape. Fold the second end of the same loop under ¼ inch. Fold the fold under ¼ inch. Stitch the bottom of the loop along the bottom chalk line. Keep the loop vertically straight with your drape. Repeat for each loop across the back of the drape.
