How to Hang Layered Curtains

Layered curtains not only look elegant, but they also serve a dual purpose. Use lightweight sheer curtain for the bottom layer and heavy, colored curtains for the top layer. The sheer fabric lets light into the room, but removes glare from the sun. The heavy curtains, when closed, keep out all light. Using energy-efficient curtains keeps the warmth inside during winter and the cool air inside during summer. To hang layered curtains, you need two curtain rods installed above the window.

Instructions

  1. Measurements

    • 1

Measure 4 inches from the top left corner of the window and up toward the ceiling. Make a mark with the pencil on the wall.

    • 2

Press the stud finder to the wall at the mark and turn it on. Slowly move the stud finder along the wall to the left of the mark until you locate the edge of the stud. Make a mark at that location. Continue to move the stud finder to the left until you locate the other edge of the stud. Make a mark.

    • 3

Repeat the steps on the right side of the window to mark the stud on that side.

    • 4

Measure from the first mark, the one 4 inches above the window, and to the center of the stud. Mark the spot and make note of the measurement. Repeat with the other side of the window. If the measurements are the same, attach the curtain rod to the center of the stud. If not, adjust the measurements until both sides are equal distance apart, but the rods must attach to the stud. A difference of 1/4 to 1/2 inch is not noticeable once the curtains are hung.

    • 5

Measure the distance between the marks in the studs from one side of the window to the other. The measurement is the size required for the curtain rod. Purchase a double rod, made for layered curtains, at that width. The measurement does not include any decorations at the ends of the rod.

    Installation

    • 6

Place the level along the marks you made on one side of the window to make sure they are level. You are checking the measurement 4 inches above the window to the mark inside the stud. Draw a straight line from one mark to other.

    • 7

Place one of the curtain rod brackets against the wall so that the holes for the screws line up with the stud mark for the bracket. Place one of the screws inside the hole and hold it in place with one hand.

    • 8

Drill the screw into the wall using the power drill. Drill the second screw in the second hole of the bracket. Erase all visible pencil marks.

    • 9

Repeat with the other side of the window and the second bracket.

    • 10

Slip the sheer curtain panels on the smaller rod, spreading them out so they completely cover the rod. Place the rod on the inside of the bracket, the space closest to the wall.

    • 11

Slip the colored curtains on the larger rod and place it on the bracket in front of the sheer curtain. Adjust the curtain panels to your desired look.
